Wai Hing Yuen and Tang Mei Deng of Vancouver have been playing the lottery together for the last year and won $1 million in the Dec. 11, 2024, Lotto 6/49 draw.

Two Vancouverites are going to kick off the new year planning some big trips thanks to a $1 million lotto win the duo is splitting.

Wai Hing Yuen and Tang Mei Deng have been playing the lottery together for the last year, said the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) in a new release.

Yuen and Deng have claimed the million-dollar win from the December 11, 2024 Lotto 6/49 draw.

The friends bought the ticket together from a lotto kiosk at Champlain Square on Kerr Street in Vancouver and selected their own numbers.

When they used the self-check machine at the Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre, Yuen said he was surprised.

“I didn’t believe it and thought 'this is a lot of zeros.' I made Tang Mei check it too!"

Deng said she was most excited to share the news with her daughter and Yuen said he hadn’t yet told anyone at the time of the prize claim.

Both of the friends have some plans to go abroad using their winnings; Deng wants to go on a cruise while Yuen is looking forward to visiting Hong Kong.

Deng described the win in one word: “Unbelievable!”
