An employee of the Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib in the 15200-block of 68 Avenue in Surrey has been charged in connection with a sexual assault.

A 59-year-old man who was working at a Sikh temple in Surrey has now been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

The charges stem from an incident more than a year ago on May 4, 2023, when police say a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted at or in the area of Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib in the Newton neighbourhood.

Police arrested a man on May 5, 2023 and say he is an employee at the temple.

Surrey RCMP announced Friday in a news release that Ajastar Singh, 59, was charged July 2 with sexual assault and sexual interference of a person under the age of 16 years.

Police say Singh appeared in court and has since been released.

While released, he has multiple conditions including not having any contact with children under the age of 16.
