Man convicted of manslaughter in Vancouver rollover death

A B.C. man has been convicted of manslaughter in connection with a 2021 fatal vehicle rollover in Vancouver.

A 19-year-old man, who was a young offender at the time of the incident and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to one count each of manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm.

Vinay Aujla, 19, was killed in the city’s 14th homicide of the year on Oct. 30, 2021. Two others were injured.

Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers discovered the victims around 11 p.m. that day after responding to a collision near Fraser Street and East 55th Avenue.

"Police believe the three men were riding in the vehicle when they were involved in a confrontation with people in another car," VPD said in a news release.

The victim later determined to be the victim of a homicide was pronounced dead at the hospital while two others received treatment for serious injuries.

Police said the man was sentenced in youth court Nov. 1 to “a nine-month custody and supervision order,” followed by 15 months’ probation.
