A woman fighting off a stranger who randomly started rummaging through her shopping cart earlier this month got some help from Burnaby RCMP’s bike cops.

The bike unit was patrolling the Metrotown area just before 10 a.m. on May 4, when they came upon a woman yelling at a man in a Metrotown mall parking lot, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release Thursday.

Officers learned the woman had stepped away from her shopping cart to place her child in her vehicle when the man began digging through her items, the release said.

Police detained the man and discovered he had an outstanding warrant for breaching his probation, which stemmed from an assault charge in Burnaby, according to police.

The man was arrested and transported to Burnaby RCMP cells to deal with the warrant.

A little over an hour later, at 11 a.m., the same two bike cops came across another man at Royal Oak Avenue and Kingsway with an outstanding warrant for theft and assault with a weapon. He too was taken to Burnaby RCMP cells.

"Our bike unit, along with numerous other units in the detachment, are out proactively looking for criminals," Burnaby RCMP Cpl Mike Kalanj said in the release. "If you see something that looks out of place, please report it."
