The iGaming industry in North America is still new. Unlike Europe, where online gambling has matured over decades, Canada is relatively new to the iGaming sector.
Players can engage in everything from betting on sports to spinning slot machines. Users can also now use online casinos without verification requirements, which lets them play without undergoing the usual identity checks. These platforms remove the need to submit personal documents like IDs or proof of address, making it easier for users to start playing instantly.
Canada’s provincial governments have established regulatory frameworks to oversee iGaming operations, ensuring they remain secure, fair and profitable. In turn, this has allowed provinces to generate revenue while maintaining high standards for player protection. Among them is British Columbia, where the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has reported exceptional financial success.
Over the past year, the BCLC generated $1.5 billion in net income, with a substantial portion reinvested into the community. Of this, $140 million went to community gaming grants, supporting local projects and organizations, while $147.3 million was allocated to the Provincial Health Special Account to bolster healthcare initiatives. $1 billion—was funnelled into funding public programs.
Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, has a regulated iGaming market. In the 2023/24 fiscal year, the province’s iGaming revenue reached $1.8 billion from online casino games, supplemented by $588 million from sports betting and $67 million from online poker. These figures mark a 70% increase in activity compared to the previous year.
A factor in the success of Canada’s iGaming industry could be the competitive landscape. By provinces allowing multiple verified operators to enter the market, brands may have to try to improve their offerings continuously.
The Canadian iGaming industry continues to grow, and the country’s emphasis on competition and regulation ensures that the market remains fair and transparent to all stakeholders.
