There had been a number of reports of domestic dogs harassing deer on Bowen Island. In a number of the cases, the Conservation Officers and RCMP had been contacted. Under Section 81 of the Wildlife Act an officer may kill a dog which is at large and harassing big game, or wildlife of an endangered or threatened species. If ownership of the dog is determined, charges may be laid under the Wildlife Act Section 80 which states: a person who causes or allows a dog to hunt or pursue big game commits an offence. The offence is punishable upon conviction of a fine not more than $5000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or both.

In her column ‘Island News’ Laura Cochrane reported that an elderly resident had the misfortune to come upon a deer being attacked by a dog. The elderly lady was in her car but even the sound of the honking horn did not deter the dog from continuing it’s attack. Ms. Cochrane voiced her concerns by saying, “What would have happened if it had been children who had come upon the dog and deer? In all probability they too would have tried to save the animal. What if the dog had turned on them? For God’s sake, when are pet owners going to show some responsibility and keep their dogs confined!”

Bowen RCMP were requesting the help of the public with regards to vandalism that took place over the March 17- 19 weekend. Willful damage to property was done to the Crippen Park picnic shelters, with explicit graffiti spray painted over signs and buildings. As well, mischief was reported at the Union Steamship Co. marina property and a window was broken at the Old General Store. Anyone with any information about these incidents was requested to contact the local detachment.

The front page headline read, “Proposed OCP amendments raise alarm.” Proposed amendments remove limits on tourist accommodations, open door for camping and trailer parks. In September 2011, the previous municipal council, led by Mayor Bob Turner, passed a series of amendments to the document, originally crafted in 1996. One year ago, council unanimously passed these new changes through first reading.
