HALIFAX — Some streets in downtown Halifax were closed for more than an hour this morning after police were alerted to a suspicious package near city hall that turned out to be part of some kind of hoax.

Halifax Regional Police say the contents of the package were designed to look like an improvised explosive device, but they say it did not pose a risk to the public.

Police say they received a report about the package in Grand Parade — the large public square in front of city hall — at 9:50 a.m.

Argyle and Barrington streets were closed to vehicles and pedestrians moving between Duke and Prince streets.

At 11:30 a.m., the scene was cleared and nearby streets were reopened.

Investigators did not release other details, but they confirmed the package was "designed to come across as threatening."
