BIRDs and oil don’t usually mix well but as of last week there’s an exception.

A new used motor oil and antifreeze collection facility opened at Bowen Island Recycling Depot last week.

The facility is funded by the non-profit BC Used Oil Management Association and is a 10-foot modified sea container with 1,000 litre tank.

Islanders are asked not to drop off containers outside of the facility – ask BIRD staff for help.

Used oil, oil filters and antifreeze are accepted.

Products not accepted include: cooking oil, sawdust, cat litter, hazardous chemicals, grease, brake fluid, transformer oil, rags, gasoline and paint.

Check the BIRD website for more details.

Before recycling regulations changed, locations that sold oil would have to take back that waste, but the province shifted to a stewardship program for waste collection, a representative from the non-profit explained at a municipal council meeting last year.
