A new mural will be coming to the Bike Barn in Snug Cove.
The Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) signalled their support for the artwork to be hung along the wall of the bike shelter on the Ferry Terminal Dock. The piece will measure 16 feet by 8 feet spread out across four panels, and portray a graffiti style representation of the word ‘Bowen’ along with the island’s deer mascot.
Bowen resident Simeon Doytchinov is the artist behind the project and approached the PAAC last year with his idea. In his proposal, Doytchinov wrote he aims to “add a unique and vibrant artistic element to a key public space while reflecting Bowen Island’s cultural heritage through its aesthetics.” Through his work he also hopes to address some of the cultural stigmas which surround graffiti based artwork.
The artist’s idea found widespread support around the council table during their meeting earlier this week. “This fellow took the initiative to come and approach everybody he had to approach to get it done. I admire that gumption and I think we should reward it,” said Coun. John Saunders.
Coun. Sue Ellen Fast felt a keystone piece of art could also promote use of the transit space. “It encourages and supports our active transportation plan in terms of highlighting that location and the function being important and inspiring for everybody to explore,” she said.
The project is estimated to cost around $1,000, and will be covered with funds from the municipality’s Public Arts Reserve.
