Bowen shares the bounty with Low Hanging Fruit

Everyone can benefit from backyard fruit harvesting

Do you have backyard fruit to share with your community?

As we enter our fourth year of the Low Hanging Fruit (LHF) initiative, we are grateful to all Bowen volunteers for their contribution that enabled us to harvest over 1,500 pounds of healthy fresh fruits in 2023.

Over the last three years we have harvested numerous varieties of apples, pears, plums, and crabapples. We share fruit that would often go to waste - from the harvest a third goes to the fruit tree donor, a third to the fruit tree pickers, and a third is sold at the Bowen Island Farmers Market to assist the LHF initiative and the local Food Bank.

As a non-profit, Low Hanging Fruit depends on our community. This year, we are thankful for the Government of Canada New Horizon for Seniors Program, Neighbourhood Small Grants, and Bowen Island Food Resilience Society. They support this initiative in the form of grants and donations that strengthen Bowen Island’s food security by harvesting backyard fruit trees.

If you are interested in picking and/or donating fruit please contact Hasan Hutchinson at [email protected]

We are looking forward to another year of abundance, connection and goodwill with you.
