Bowen Library Summer Reading Club programming in full swing

Space, Theatre, the Deep Sea and more are all topics of exploration

A summer of curiosities awaits young readers and learners at the Bowen Island Library!

This year’s BC Summer Reading Club theme is “World of Curiosities” and our weekly events, led by some very special guests, will engage all curious minds aged 5-14. Registration is required for all programs, and space is limited. Folks can register at bipl.ca/srcevents

Do you have young space enthusiasts in your family? Experts from the The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre will offer a fun and engaging presentation about the Moon’s unique environment on Tuesday, July 16. Participants aged 7-12 will get to launch their own lunar mission and create challenges using Ozobot coding robots. This hands-on STEM based activity will introduce children to principles of robotics and coding.

Nature has many stories to tell, you just have to follow the wildlife clues! On Tuesday, July 30, kids aged 5-14 can get curious with Metro Vancouver park interpreters and learn how to read animal tracks, follow bird calls, and identify other signs of Bowen wildlife. Discover what these animal signs reveal about the mysterious creatures of Crippen Regional Park.

Ever wonder what it takes to deliver a stellar theatrical performance? Kids aged 5-8 and 9-12 can join one of two sessions with local thespian Calder Stewart on Tuesday, August 6. Learn some serious (and not-so-serious!) acting skills while having a fun time with new friends.

The deep sea has the most curious creatures! Craft connoisseur Wendy Harding will be leading two groups (age 5-8 and 9-12) on Tuesday, August 13 in crafting a decorative windsock. Made to look like deep-sea creatures, participants can then show them off at this year’s Bowfest, where the theme is Under the Sea.

On Sunday, August 18, special guest Leif David the Magician will be bringing a world of mystery to the library in his 45-minute-long all-ages children’s magic show, packed with amazing magic and comedy. This show is brimming with audience participation, and audience volunteers will join Leif David to help him perform the magic for everyone!

And of course those participating in the 50-Day Reading Challenge should save Tuesday, August 27 in their calendars, so they don’t miss a chance to celebrate their reading achievements and receive a medal from Bowen Island’s mayor Andrew Leonard.

Our first two Summer Reading Club events were a hit, with our Lego Launch Party and Curious Clay Creatures. If you’re curious about all the upcoming fun, make sure to register your spot in the events of your choice! There’s also still time to register for a 50-Day Reading Challenge tracker booklet, where kids can collect stickers for each week of reading, aiming for 15 minutes a day.

And did you know we have a magical shrinking mouse in the library? Come each week to track it down, and submit your name for our weekly prize draw! We hope to see you at the Bowen Library this summer, one of the best places to be for young curious minds!
