Amid plans announced this week to re-open the province to business and recreation over the next month, there’s continuing good news on local COVID case counts.
The number of new infections is continuing to drop on the North Shore, for the fifth week in a row.
There were 50 new COVID infections in the week ending May 22, according to BC’s Centre for Disease Control, down from 85 reported last week and 160 reported May 1.
The number of cases has plummeted from the peak of the “third wave” on the North Shore in the middle of April.
Of the cases reported in the week ending May 22, 47 are in North Vancouver. West Vancouver reported only three new infections.
The number of new COVID infections is also dropping throughout the Lower Mainland, with numbers also falling Fraser Health hot spots, including Surrey, Delta and Burnaby.
The BC Centre for Disease Control now provides more detailed information about where cases have been occurring, as well as information on vaccination rates.
On the North Shore, that data (which tracked cases from May 18 to 24) showed the lowest daily rates of infection in the Ambleside area of West Vancouver, on Bowen Island and in Lions Bay, with no cases in any of those communities. Most parts of the North Shore ranged from 1 to 3 daily cases per 100,000. Highest rates were in the western part of the District of North Vancouver and in the eastern part of City of North Vancouver which both had infection rates of seven daily cases per 100,000.
Similarly, positivity rates for COVID tests ranged from zero in Ambleside and Bowen Island to between two and three per cent in the eastern part of the District of North Vancouver and British Properties. The central part of the North Shore had positivity rates of between four and five per cent, except for the eastern part of the City of North Vancouver, which had a rate of 8.6 per cent.
A map of vaccination coverage showed between 64 and 72 per cent of adults over 18 on the North Shore have received one dose of vaccine. Total vaccination rates are higher in the District of North Vancouver and lower in the City of North Vancouver and the British Properties. Among adults over 50, vaccination rates on the North Shore range from 81 per cent in the Caulfeild and British Properties area to 88 per cent in the eastern District of North Vancouver.
