Police take alleged bank robber into custody after Chilliwack standoff

No one was injured during the event, police say.

A man who allegedly tried to rob a bank in Chilliwack, B.C., has been taken into custody in an incident that triggered a standoff with police.

Video and photos shared on social media show heavily armed police and a K9 unit outside a local branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). In one clip, a woman is seen exiting the building, running toward the safety of a group of police officers.

RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk said a 64-year-old man was taken into custody at 1:35 p.m. Thursday.

“No one was physically injured during this event,” said Vrolyk.

A number of police units responded to the incident, she added, including the Integrated Emergency Response Team, RCMP Air Services and K9 units.
